Course Description

The contents of this course are the following:

1.   Fundamentals of light (Properties of light, quantities, units and measurements)

2.   Light and Sight

3.   Fundamentals of colors

4.   light sources (daylight and electric light)

5.   Natural light in buildings (Daylight Design)

6.   Artificial lighting design and calculation (Electrical lighting design)

7.   Computer applications in lighting design (daylight and artificial light)

Course Objectives

The objective of the course is to gives the students the basics of environmental systems regarding building illumination. In this course students will be introduced to the fundamental of illumination design in buildings and its effects on space design and the materials selection.

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences
  • Be able to apply knowledge of physics, mathematics, and engineering science to understand light, vision, color theory and light source.
  • Be able to implement a complete but simple design by specifying all components of the system and providing a proper light system layout (natural and/or artificial) using manual calculations on simple typical examples.
  • Be able to conduct proper and simple analysis of an existing lighting system in order to assess its performance and to evaluate its ability to meet preset design criteria.
