Course Description

This course deals with the principles and experimental evidence leading to our understanding of the gene concept and the role of DNA as genetic material. Patterns of inheritance, the relationship between genotype and phenotype, and transmission, coding, and expression of genetic information are also included

Course Objectives

Introduce the students to the principles of genetics and heredity of characters and the role of DNA as genetic material.

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences

At the end of this course students should be able to:

  1. Recognize the phases of the cell cycle and cell division
  2. Recognize the structure of DNA and the mechanisms of replication, transcription and translation
  3. Understand and explain the rules of Mendelian and non Mendelian inheritance
  4. Recognize the basic concepts of population and quantitative genetics
  5. Understand the basic biotechnology related to genetic manipulation of plants and animals
