Course Description

This course provides an introduction to nursing in which students will be introduced to the history and development of nursing locally and internationally. The course also provides an overview of the health care delivery system in connection to the Palestinian health system, policies, quality metrics and health outcomes, reducing gaps and health inequalities, and eliminating racism, exclusion and discrimination in the health system. Topics covered also include the relationship between society and health, health manpower in general and the allied health professions in particular. The primary, secondary and tertiary health care services and the modalities of service provision are discussed. Students are provided with an overview of each of different allied health professions, the distinctive role of each of the professions within the health care team; significant aspects of the work of each of the professions, and the skills and competencies required.

Course Objectives

Characterize nursing and differentiate among the functions and roles of nurses. Summarize nursing theories, non-nursing theories that influence nursing practice, and analyzing historical events in the evolution of nursing.
