Course Description

Application of knowledgeable caring and evidence-based practice guidelines to introductory practice in medical-surgical nursing roles when caring for adult patients

Course Objectives

A. Use evidence-based practice, critical thinking, and scientific rationales to plan safe care for adults who are experiencing alterations in health.

B. Begin to prioritize nursing diagnoses and interventions with the application of theoretical content.

C. Utilize knowledge and concepts from the arts, sciences, and humanities to plan nursing care to enhance individual patient’s health outcomes and quality of life.

D. Follow professional standards and guidelines to plan safe clinical care for patients.

E. Explore the roles of the BSN prepared nurse, focusing on care provider, communicator, collaborator, and patient educator.

F. Respect patients’ unique responses to health and illness based on socio-cultural and physical environments.

G. Explore basic concepts of a community continuum of care, including the professional roles of interdisciplinary teams, community resource agencies, and family support systems.

H. Demonstrate individual learning activities and accountability to meet own learning and professional development needs.

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences

At the end of this course, the student nurse will be able to:

 

a- Knowledge and Understanding:

  1. 1 Describe the structure and function of the organs of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, liver  

    neurologic ,renal& musculoskeletal Functions

  1. 2 Explain  the etiology, clinical manifestations, and management of GI ,liver, neurologic,  

    renal & musculoskeletal dysfunction

  1. 3  Describe the significance of physical assessment to the diagnosis of GI , liver ,

    neurologic & renal dysfunction

  1. 4 Describe the medical, surgical, and nursing management of patients with GI, liver

    neurologic & renal dysfunction

 

b- Intellectual Skills:

  1. 1 Use assessment parameters appropriate for determining the status of GI, liver , 

neurologic  renal & musculoskeletal Functions

  1. 2 Describe the appropriate, teaching, and follow-up care for patients who are undergoing  

diagnostic testing of the GI ,liver , neurologic & renal dysfunction and  musculoskeletal dysfunction& orthopedic surgery.

b.  3 Use the nursing process as a framework for care of the patient  with GI ,liver , renal ,      

       musculoskeletal & neurologic dysfunction( ischemic stroke& a cerebral aneurysm.)

b.  4 Relate jaundice, portal hypertension, ascites, varices, nutritional deficiencies, and  

        hepatic coma to pathophysiologic alterations of the liver.

b.  5 Compare approaches to management of cholelithiasis.

b.  6 Compare the various types of cerebrovascular disorders

b.  7 Relate the principles of nursing management to the care of a patient in the acute stage    

          of an diseases (ischemic stroke.)

b. 8 Compare the nursing care of the patient undergoing total hip replacement with those of  

     the patient undergoing total knee replacement.

 

c- Professional and Practical Skills:

  1. 1 Utilize the proper way in the physical assessment ( e.g lung &abdominal palpation,  

percussion &auscultation).    

c.  2. Provide proper care & support for clients complaining from disease

c.  3. Practice problem based learning for the disseminated scenarios.

 c. 4 Utilize teaching methods  in meeting the needs of the patient with an ileostomy &

      colostomy care
