Building upon previously developed adult health knowledge and skills, the student plans, prioritizes, implements and evaluates culturally appropriate, safe, quality nursing care of adults with complex health problems. Principles of collaborative care, health disparities, cultural and ethnic differences, genetics, ethics and legal aspects of care, cost and safety are threaded throughout the course.
pon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate the ability to use and communicate via information technology as well as through traditional written and verbal methods
2. Identify prevalent medical and surgical conditions affecting the adult
3. Utilize the nursing process to assist in developing a plan of care for selected medical- surgical conditions
4. Identify criteria for setting priorities in planning for the individual client with medical and/or surgical conditions
5. Discuss the etiology, pathology, risk factors, signs, symptoms, diagnostic tests, medical/surgical treatment complications, and prevention for selected diseases related to body systems.
6. Determine the discharge and teaching needs for patients with selected health problems
7. Assess the patient/family responses to the medical/surgical interventions used in their care.
8. Provide health education that addresses disease/illness prevention, health promotion, and health restoration
9. Follow the legal and ethical considerations for the clients with medical and /or surgical health condition (s).
10. Develop critical thinking and problem solving abilities appropriate for the care of adult patients
11. Integrate the concept of holistic approach in dealing with the selected health condition;
Demonstrate accountability by evaluating the quality and safety of care
Analyze research evidence for application to select patients
Administer nursing care that reflects professional values and standards
Collaborate with other health professionals to improve quality of care, promote health and reduce risk
Integrate patient care technology and informatics to provide, communicate and evaluate nursing care
Integrate plans for health promotion and disease prevention to reduce risk and improve health outcomes
Demonstrate professional values, ethics, legal and moral standards in the provision of care
Advocate use of health care policies and regulations to improve care for those with health disparities
Provide quality, safe nursing care to acutely ill adults with complex health problems
Demonstrate the ability to apply an experience-based knowledge to practical problems
