Course Description

This course is the first of a series of adult health nursing courses. Students will build their theoretical base for future application. It will focus on acquisition of knowledge related to health care delivery and evidence-based nursing practice, critical thinking, ethical decision making, and the nursing process, individual and family homeostasis, stress, and adaptation, overview of transcultural nursing, chronic illness and disability, principles and practices of rehabilitation, and fluid and electrolytes: balance and disturbance that will be applied in students’ clinical practice.

This introduction to adult-health nursing course focuses on the care of adults with uncomplicated medical-surgical alterations in health. The role of the nurse as provider of care, communicator, teacher, manager, and member of a profession are expanded and provide the framework for clinical application and evaluation. 

Course Objectives

Upon Completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Describe the basic concepts of nursing including healthcare delivery and evidence-based practice, critical thinking, ethical decision making, the nursing process, health education, health promotion, and health assessment.

2. Discuss biophysical and psychosocial concepts as they related to nursing practice: health and nutritional assessment, individual and family homeostasis, stress, and adaptation; transcultural nursing, chronic illness, disabilities, rehabilitation, and care of the older adult.

3. Understand concepts and challenges regarding patient management including pain management, fluid and electrolyte balance and disturbance.

4. Describe the basic role of the nurse in critical thinking, ethical decision making, and the nursing process, individual and family homeostasis, stress, and adaptation, overview of transcultural nursing, chronic illness and disability, principles and practices of rehabilitation, and fluid and electrolytes: balance and disturbance that will be applied in students’ clinical practice.

5. Describe the nurse’s role in assessment and implementation of patients with chronic illness and disability.

6. Understand the nurse’s critical responsibilities related to nursing practice and how support that with health education and promotion of client and patient health.

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences

Upon completion of this course, student should be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of the care of adults (by QSEN: safety, evidence-based practice, teamwork and collaboration, and patient-centered care).

2. Demonstrate knowledge of the theories and principles applied in the skills lab and at the clinical facilities.
