Course Description

Course Description
This course provides the students clinical experience in verification and dispensing of ophthalmic
materials, lensectomy, frame selection, shape of human face, dispensing of spectacle wear, fitting and
adjusting of spectacle correction, prescription writing, dispensing of eye protectors, patient counseling
and management of dispensing problems and prescribing for high myopia and aphakia spectacle
accessories.
 

Course Objectives

Course Objectives
By the end of this course students should be able to take accurate frame and spectacle lens
measurements and record these clearly, measure, fit and adjust spectacle frames, glaze, fit advanced
types of ophthalmic lenses and tints, solve problems related to dispensing spectacles.

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)
A) Knowledge & Understanding
1. Classify various types and material of ophthalmic lenses.
2. Classify various types and materials of frames.
3. List the shapes of bifocal lenses.
B) Intellectual Skills
1. Calculate power of prismatic effect.
2. Calculate thickness and diameter of the lens.
3. Calculate the diameter and length of bifocal segment.
4. Measure IPD and FPD and calculate the decentration of the lens.
5. Measure Nose Bridge.
6. Measure power of the lenses by hand neutralization, manual and digital lensmeter.
7. Compare between patients’ faces shapes.
8. Compare between monofocal, bifocal, trifocal and multifocal lenses.
9. Compare between shapes, tint, and coating of the lenses.

10. Compare between common lens material ( refractive index, density ,thickness and Abbe
value).
C) Professional & Practical Skills
1. Prescribe the appropriate correcting lens.
2. Estimate the size of the lenses during glazing.
3. Estimate the amount of tinting.
4. Practice on manual and automated edger.
5. Practice on centration machine.
6. Practice on handing, manual, automated lensmeter.
7. Practice on Drilling machine.
8. Practice on Grover machine.
