Course Description

Understand the impact of environmental factors on the eye, and the optometric management of
environmentally produced ocular and visual problems. Brief optometric aspects of occupational health and
safety. Eye hazards, eye protection, ocular first-aid, ocular and visual factors in the workplace, visual
ergonomics, visual standards, vision screening, lighting design, epidemiology of occupational eye disease.
Handling of clinical and occupational data. Occupational health and safety law. Visual aspects of driving and
aviation. The screen-based equipment user.

 

Course Objectives

Aims:
Environmental and work related conditions requiring special visual correction , accessories or conditions

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences

1. Knowledge and Understanding
a. Demonstrate knowledge of visual standards for various occupations
b. Complete an occupational history on each adult patient
c. Recognize the principle of environmental optometry
d. Be familiar with the three general areas or levels of occupational vision services: primary care,
eye safety consultation, vision consultation.

e. Learn how to care for the patients in all aspects; visual well-being, whether it involves home,
work, or play
f. Identify the eye hazardous related to the environment
g. Oversee the procurement of eye protection devices (both prescription and nonprescription)
2.Professional and Practical Skills
a. Diagnose and manage occupationally induced conditions (making referrals when necessary)
b. Assess his or her patients’ occupational vision demands and provide appropriate treatments as
necessary
c. Exercise clinical judgement in the prescription of safety eyewear in industry and sports
d. Analyse visual and environmental factors influencing visual efficiency
e. Critically evaluate ocular hazards in working environments
f. Perform an eye-safety workplace assessment
g. Assess, evaluate and recommend appropriate lighting design and analyse visual screening
protocols
h. Educate patients on the need to incorporate eye safety principles into their daily activities.
