Morphology is a linguistics course that deals with the internal structure of lexemes, including compounds, phrases, and sentence idioms. The course will be mainly concerned with English morphology. The course teases apart the word ingredients explicitly by contrasting them as units of meaning versus units of structure, pronounceable entities versus more abstract entities, inflectionally related word forms versus derivationally related word forms.  Compounds and idiomatic expressions are studies for their similarities and differences to the notion of the word and its structure. Students are introduced to productivity and unproductivity as morphological features of words and word structures.  A conclusive part of this course will be about the historical division within English morphology especially Germanic versus Romance word-formation processes.
